Thaddeus McCarthy was twice ordained Bishop of Dioceses in Cork but didn't take up either position. In 1482 McCarthy was appointed Bishop of Ross but the diocese already had a Bishop, Hugh O'Driscoll. He fought his case in Rome but lost. In 1490 he was appointed Bishop of Cork and Cloyne but again, on arrival in Cork he found Gerald Fitzgerald in the position. He travelled back to Rome where he was confirmed as Bishop but died on the return journey.
